Transportation Within the Geopark
Train
Two train lines run through the Itoigawa Global Geopark
The Hokuriku Line runs along the coast and offers easy access to many of the coastal geosites including Ichiburi, Oyashirazu, Omi Coast, Itoigawa Coast, Benten-iwa, and Tsutsuishi-Hamatokuai
The Oito Line starts at Itoigawa Station and runs roughly along the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line south into the mountains. Offering gorgeous views of the Himekawa Gorge and the Northern Alps, it’s no wonder why we call the Oito Line the Geopark Train! Use the Oito Line to access the Salt Trail geosites and the Himekawa Gorge geosites.
Bus
Bus service in the Itoigawa Geopark is provided by the Itoigawa Bus Company.
A number of bus lines run through the city providing access to many geosites. Check the tourism information center for more information and detailed bus route maps. Be sure to ride the Town Loop Bus, which stops at many of Central Itoigawa’s must-see geopark spots, including the Fossa Magna Museum and the Hisui-en Gardens!
Seasonal bus tours are also available. These day tours include a boxed lunch and are an easy, relaxed way to enjoy the Geopark. (Note: Bus tours are currently offered in the Japanese Language only)
Taxi
Three taxi companies operate within Itoigawa City and are prepared to take you anywhere you need to go!Whether you need a taxi to take you high into the mountains to begin your ascent or you just need a quick ride to your hotel, taxis are a convenient and surprisingly affordable way to get around town.

Rental Car
With a valid Japanese driver’s license or International Driving Permit, you can easily rent a car, offering totally unfettered access to the entire Itoigawa Global Geopark!

Please have a valid Japanese driver’s license or International Driving Permit and your passport (or Japanese Residency Card) ready when you rent a car.
