At the heart of this initiative is the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). Established in 2004, GGN is made up of regions from around the world that have met rigorous criteria for certification. As of April 2025, the Geopark family has grown to include 229 regions from 50 countries, with 10 UNESCO Global Geoparks located right here in Japan!<\/p>\n<p>While Geopark activities began as an independent program supported by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), they were made an official UNESCO program in November 2015, integrated as the International Geoscience and Geoparks Program (IGGP), cementing the status of Geoparks alongside World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserves.<\/p>\n<p>Itoigawa was an early adopter of the Geopark model and was the first Global Geopark designation in Japan. At Itoigawa UNESCO Global Geopark, we are committed to leading the way for geological conservation and sustainable community development both at home in Japan and beyond.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/global-geoparks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tUNESCO Global Geopark Website\n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<img src=\"https:\/\/geo-itoigawa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/\u30e6\u30cd\u30b9\u30b3\u4e16\u754c\u30b8\u30aa\u30d1\u30fc\u30af_\u5206\u5e03\u56f3_202504.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tFeatures of Geoparks\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>UNESCO Global Geoparks all share the following 4 main characteristics. Each of these are a requirement for Geoparks and each is included withing the Operational Guidelines of the Global Geoparks Network.<\/p>\n<p>The following information is paraphrased from the GGN website:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Geological HeritageGeology of International Value<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A fundamental requirement for any region to become a UNESCO Global Geopark is the existence and recognition of geological heritage of international significance. The area must show that its rocks, fossils or landscapes are not just local treasures, but have cultural and\/or scientific value on a global scale.<\/p>\n<p>A dedicated team of international experts conduct an in-depth assessment to verify this value and its effective conservation and use.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>ManagementStrong Governance for a Sustainable Future<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Global Geoparks must be effectively managed by a legally recognized organization governed by the local laws. This management body does not act in isolation as it must encompass the entirety of the Geopark&#8217;s territory and actively involve local stakeholders, community groups and partner organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the Geopark must operate under a comprehensive management plan which is approved by all relevant parties and serves as a roadmap for sustainable development, balancing conservation with economic growth.<\/p>\n\t<h4><strong>VisibilityBringing the Geopark to Life<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A UNESCO Global Geopark is not just a protected area; it is a catalyst for sustainable local economic development. Geoparks are always moving forward, always improving and always enriching the lives of the local community. A driving tool for this is the responsible use of local geological heritage in the promotion of &#8220;geotourism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, visibility is vital for Geoparks. Visitors to the region must know and understand that they are in a Geopark and the Geopark must be active in promoting its area and activities through a variety of channels.<\/p>\n\t<h4><strong>NetworkingWorking Together for a Shared Purpose<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>No Geopark exists in isolation. In addition to close connections within the local community, Geoparks must work together through global platforms such as the Asia Pacific Geoparks Network and the Global Geoparks Network.<\/p>\n<p>These international networks allow us to share our successes, learn from each other, and further promote the mission of Geoparks. Perhaps even more importantly, by connecting people from diverse backgrounds through a shared love for the Earth, these networks help promote cross-cultural understanding and contribute to international camaraderie and peace.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\t\t10 Keywords\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>These 10 keywords define our mission as a Geopark. This includes not only fossils and minerals like jadeite, but also local flora and fauna. By leaving these treasures undisturbed where they belong, we ensure that their beauty and scientific value remain intact for future generations to enjoy.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tGlobal Geoparks vs. <br \/>Other Site Designations \t<\/h3>\n\tWhile UNESCO Global Geoparks, World Heritage Sites, and Biosphere Reserves are all prestigious UNESCO programs, they each have distinct goals and criteria.\nThe primary difference lies in their core purpose. For example, World Heritage Sites are primarily focused on the strict protection of irreplaceable natural or cultural monuments. In that framework, the day-to-day relationship between the site and the local community is less central than the preservation of the site itself.\nIn contrast, a UNESCO Global Geopark is about &#8220;Protection through Participation.&#8221; It&#8217;s not enough to protect geological heritage; we also use it to fuel education, scientific research, and regional revitalization.\nWhile Biosphere Reserves also focus on the relationship between people and the local ecosystem, Geoparks stand out for their strong focus on sustainable development. First, a region must receive a formal recommendation from the <b>Japan Geopark Committee (JGC)<\/b>. Once recommended, the site undergoes a two-stage evaluation by the <b>Global Geoparks Network (GGN)<\/b>: a comprehensive document review followed by an intensive on-site inspection by international experts.<\/p>\n<p>UNESCO Global Geoparks are held to a standard of continuous improvement. Every four years, the Geopark must undergo a &#8220;Revalidation&#8221; process to ensure it is still meeting the strict international criteria.<\/p>\n<p>The results of this evaluation are issued as &#8220;Cards,&#8221; similar to a referee&#8217;s signals in a match:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Green Card (Revalidated): The Geopark has met all standards, is making continuous improvement and is successfully renewed for another four years.<\/li>\n<li>Yellow Card (Conditional Revalidation): The Geopark has serious issues that need urgent attention. The Geopark is renewed for two years to give it time to either resolve or address the issue before the next revalidation.<\/li>\n<li>Red Card (Decertification): If after receiving a Yellow Card a Geopark fails to adequately address the concerns or no longer meets the criteria for a Geopark, it will lose its status as a UNESCO Global Geopark.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This strict system of revalidation ensures that UNESCO Global Geoparks like Itoigawa remain active and vibrant. It drives Geoparks to constantly look toward the future and make improvements in areas of safety, educational quality, visitor satisfaction and community development.
