In fact, jadeite is one of the oldest minerals found in Itoigawa Geopark.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img src=\"https:\/\/geo-itoigawa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/img030.jpg\" alt=\"\" itemprop=\"image\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n\t<h3>Birthplace of<br \/>\nJade Culture<\/h3>\n<p>Jade was first used by the people of Itoigawa over 6,500 years ago, with the first jade beads appearing nearly 5,500 years ago. This makes Itoigawa&#8217;s jade culture even older than that of Mesoamerica and possibly the oldest in the world!<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img src=\"https:\/\/geo-itoigawa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/img020.jpg\" alt=\"\u3072\u3059\u3044\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"560\" width=\"800\" title=\"\u3072\u3059\u3044\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n\t<h3>Translucent and<br \/>\nBeautiful<\/h3>\n<p>There are other jadeite deposits in Japan, but not only are Itoigawa&#8217;s deposits the largest, but they are also the only deposits where significant amounts of gemstone quality jade has been found.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Itoigawa&#8217;s jadeite deposits are the only gemstone quality jadeite deposits anywhere in Northeast Asia!<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of Itoigawa&#8217;s jade has been celebrated both locally and across the Japanese islands, even appearing in ancient poetry and mythological texts.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img src=\"https:\/\/fmm.geo-itoigawa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mineral-040.jpg\" alt=\"Itoigawaite\" itemprop=\"image\" title=\"Itoigawaite\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n\t<h3>Discovery of<br \/>\nNew Minerals<\/h3>\n<p>Itoigawa&#8217;s jade is not just a pretty face, it&#8217;s important academically as well!<\/p>\n<p>The specific conditions deep underground which produced jadeite also produced a variety of other rare minerals.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the minerals newly discovered in Itoigawa\u2015such as itoigawaite, rengeite and matsubaraite\u2015were discovered in Itoigawa&#8217;s jade.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\t\tJapan&#8217;s #1 Pebble Town\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<img src=\"https:\/\/geo-itoigawa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/course4_050.png\" alt=\"\u7cf8\u9b5a\u5ddd(\u30d2\u30b9\u30a4)\u6d77\u5cb8\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"600\" width=\"800\" title=\"\u7cf8\u9b5a\u5ddd(\u30d2\u30b9\u30a4)\u6d77\u5cb8\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n\t<p>Sitting on the border of the Fossa Magna where two continental plates meet has blessed Itoigawa with a staggering variety of stones. This is why we like to call ourselves &#8220;Japan&#8217;s #1 Pebble Town.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many of the beaches in Itoigawa are covered in pebbles of all shapes, colors and origins: <strong>igneous rocks<\/strong> which formed from magma or volcanic eruptions; <strong>sedimentary rocks<\/strong> which formed at the bottom of ancient seas; and <strong>metamorphic rocks<\/strong> which formed in special conditions deep within the Earth.<\/p>\n<p>With a little bit of luck, you might even find pebbles of jade!<\/p>\n<p>Note: While rockpicking along the beaches is a popular activity for locals and visitors alike, it&#8217;s important to remember the rules:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Do not pick rocks larger than palm-sized.<\/li>\n<li>Do not pick large quantities of rocks.<\/li>\n<li>Do not pick rocks at protected sites or along rivers.<\/li>\n<li>Rockpicking for commercial use is prohibited without permission.<\/li>\n<li>If you no longer want the rocks you have picked, return them to the beach where they were found.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>\n\t\t\tThe Colors of Jade\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>While green is the most famous, Itoigawa&#8217;s jade can be found in a variety of colors including white, lavender, blue and black! In other regions it is even possible to find red or orange jade. Jade is made up of a translucent white mineral called jadeite which contains silicon, aluminum and sodium.
